Nataliya Chaplygina founded the vocal ensemble Acanto together with an ambitious “seed cell” of eight singers in 2010. They made their debut together with a program of Claudio Monteverdi’s madrigals in the Mendelssohn-Remise in Berlin. Nataliya Chaplygina led the ensemble until the end of 2021 and steadily advanced it.

She grew up in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, where she completed her first university education in musical theater and choir conducting and realized music projects for the German Embassy. In 2000 she came to Berlin on a DAAD scholarship. Here she studied choir and orchestral conducting at the Hanns Eisler University of Music with Professor Jörg-Peter Weigle and successfully completed her training in 2006.

Under the professional and passionate direction of Nataliya Chaplygina, the vocal ensemble Acanto offered its guests around 30 concerts in Berlin and outside – in Brandenburg, Greifswald or on the Baltic Sea. The classical repertoire was and is broad. The a capella works range from the Renaissance to contemporary compositions by Eric Whitacre and Arvo Pärt. Larger pieces such as the tango mass “Misa a Buenos Aires” by Martín Palmeri with an orchestra or a concert performance of the Rachmaninoff opera “Aleko” with soloists and instrumental accompaniment were also repeatedly on the program.

She is currently working as a choir and orchestra director in Berlin, including for the ver.di Chor.
